Turquoise is a stone that can be found only in dry and barren regions. It is formed when acidic copper-rich groundwater seeps down through the soil and reacts with other minerals that contain phosphorus and aluminum. Turquoise is a porous mineral. It is semi translucent to opaque. It has a Mohs harness of 5 to 6. This stone has been found in ancient Egyptian tombs as far back as 4000 BCE making it one of the oldest gems used in jewelry. The Egyptians called turquoise “mefkat”, which means delight or joy. Turquoise is the birthstone for December and is the gem of the 11th anniversary.
Turquoise is identified with detoxification, serenity, protection, wisdom, balance, strength, friendship, love, positivity, and sensitivity. It is associated with the heart, throat, and third eye chakras as well as the planets Venus and Neptune. Elementally the stone is linked to Earth, Air and Fire. Astrologically it is aligned with the signs Scorpio, Sagittarius, Aquarius and Pisces.
Turquoise dispels negative energies and helps protect the wearer against outside influences and atmospheric pollutants.
